Monitor a color //c//c Color Monitor

No cabe duda que como dice la canción “la vida te da sorpresas…” cuando ya había dado por terminado el proyecto Apple //c, encontré en un “pulguero” local arrumbadas, una Apple //c con su respectivo monitor a color. no pude resistir a la tentación, ya que esos monitores son escasos y muy difíciles de conseguir, aparte de la diversión que conlleva el restaurar algo así. Por supuesto que el estado era lamentable: completamente amarillos, sucios y empolvados. después de un rato de regateo pagué $50 por los dos.

Al llegar a casa, después de probar que funcionaran, comencé el clásico proceso de limpieza, desarmado y restauración. Lo mas importante es que al trabajar con estos monitores, se tiene que tener mucha precaución pues retienen la carga eléctrica por un tiempo, y pueden soltar un choque eléctrico mortal.

Me armé de un par de guantes de hule, y procedí a descargar el monitor. Ya con mas seguridad, pero sin quitarme los guantes, desarmé las piezas plásticas, les di una buena lavada con cepillo y fibra para dejarlo bien limpio y listo para el Retr0bright.

Tomó todo el fin de semana para lograr restaurar el color de el monitor y CPU a su estado original. Esta vez utilicé una versión mas fuerte con Peróxido al 30%, lo que redujo el tiempo de mantenerlo al sol.

El ColorMonitor IIc, era lo ultimo en tecnología en su tiempo. Tiene controles de vertical, horizontal y barrido, y en la parte frontal de brillo, color y un botón para cambiar de color a blanco y negro, esto es muy practico para cuando se usa un procesador de palabras, o la versión de “80 columnas” que requiere mas nitidez en la pantalla.

Claro que este viejo monitor tiene algunos detalles: una esquina esta rota, tiene una rajadura en la parte superior y la puerta de controles tiene rota una bisagra, pero todo (menos la esquina) es reparable. Sobre todo después del tratamiento de Retr0bright, el monitor parece nuevo otra vez, listo para ser usado otras dos décadas.

Reparando la bisagra.

Como mencione anteriormente, una de las bisagras de la tapa frontal, que cubre los controles del monitor se encuentra rota, de hecho solo quedan pequeños pedazos por lo que he tratado de recrearla, con pedazos de plástico. mis primeros intentos parecían dar frutos, pero al momento de conectarlo se rompen con la presión. el problema es tratar de unir varias piezas formando la nueva bisagra, me doy cuenta que es necesario crear la pieza de un solo trozo de plástico, para que resista la presión.

I could not resist the temptation, since these monitors are scarce and very hard to get (apart from the fun that comes with restoring them)  so  after a bit of haggling bought them for $50. Of course the state was lamentable: completely yellow, dirty and dusty.

Upon arriving home, after testing that worked, I started the classic process of cleaning, dismantling and restoration. The most important thing is that when working with these monitors, you have to be very careful as they retain the charge for a while, and can drop a fatal electrical shock.

I armed myself with a pair of rubber gloves, and proceeded to open the monitor. I followed the procedure and discharged the screen. Now with more confidence, but without taking off the gloves, disarmed the plastic parts, and gave them a good washing with fiber and brush to get it ready for Retr0bright.

I took all weekend to restore the color of the monitor and CPU to its original state. This time I used a stronger Peroxide at 30%, reducing the time to keep it in the sun.

The Color Monitor IIc, was the latest in technology at the time. It controls vertical and horizontal sweep, and the front brightness, color and a button to change color to black and white, this is very handy for using a word processor, or “80 column” that requires more clarity on the screen.

Of course this old monitor has some details: one corner is broken with a crack on the top and door controls have broken a hinge, but everything (except the corner) is repairable. Especially after Retr0bright treatment, the monitor looks new again, ready to use another two decades.

Repairing the hinge.

As mentioned earlier, one of the hinges of the front cover, covering the controls of the monitor is broken, in fact there are only small pieces so I tried to recreate it, with pieces of plastic. my first attempts seemed to bear fruit, but when connecting with the pressure break. the problem is trying to join several pieces forming the new hinge, I realize that it is necessary to create the part of a single piece of plastic to withstand the pressure.
